In August each year the anticipated Sydney Spring Carnival kicks off, much to the pleasure of racing fans and enthusiasts across the country. One of the first race days is the Warwick Stakes Day. The showcase race of this meeting at the esteemed Randwick racecourse is the Gr.2 Warwick Stakes. Punters have plenty to be excited about, as the Warwick Stakes is accompanied on the day with the Gr.3 Up And Coming Stakes and the Silver Shadow Stakes as well as a number of other listed races. There is definitely plenty to bet on and plenty of money to win!
The Warwick Stakes is a weight-for-age event run over 1400m. Prizemoney is set at $150 000 and it is the first race of this distance in the carnival, giving the runners a nice start to the season. Held the week before the Warwick Stakes, the Gr.2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill is a fantastic lead-up race also run under weight-for-age conditions. The slight step up in distance for the Warwick Stakes is a good challenge for the horses in training for more lucrative races including the $1 million Gr. 1 Golden Rose held the following week. The Golden Rose (1400m) is the premier event of the carnival and is a race for three-year-olds at set weights. For Warwick Stakes’ contenders not aimed at the Golden Rose, other excellent races they may follow up with include the Gr.1 George Main Stakes (1600m) held at Randwick towards the end of September.
The distance and position of the Warwick Stakes in the Spring Carnival program, draws a range of horses including some quality sprinters, fit horses in good form after racing at the Brisbane Winter Carnival, and stayers seeking a mid-distance race to really build their gallop. This array of form increases the intrigue for Warwick Stakes betting, as there are so many different types of horses competing.
