Waller Underlines Best Chances in 2014 Warwick Stakes

August 19th, 2014

Poised to dominate the final field for this weekend’s Royal Randwick feature, trainer Chris Waller has revealed he is most excited by the chances of resuming pair Royal Descent and Sacred Falls in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m); labelling the classy stable mates as genuine weight-for-age horses.

Each Group 1 champions in their own right, Royal Descent and Sacred Falls both returned to racing in great form through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, and have reportedly taken well to their time in the paddock.

Confirming both will accept positions in the 2014 Warwick Stakes first-up, Waller told the Herald Sun he is confident both Royal Descent and Sacred Falls will relish a damp surface, should Royal Randwick exhibit such a surface on Saturday.

“I’m really excited by Royal Descent and Sacred Falls, who are weight-for-age horses,” Waller said.

“Royal Descent has come back well and she’s in for a good preparation.

“The Warwick Stakes is a good starting point for these horses without putting them under too much pressure. They’ll go their various destinations from there.

“I’m fortunate because I’ve got some versatile horses who can handle wet tracks. In the modern era we get a lot of wet tracks.”

Securing an impressive total of four wins and six minor places from just 16 competitive starts so far, Royal Descent performed to a high standard over four starts though autumn, and while unlucky not to come away with a triumph, finished a credible fifth in both the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and second in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) most notably.

Returning to the track in similarly devastating form, Sacred Falls was unlucky to finish just outside the places in fourth in both the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) first-up, but returned to the winner’s circle when charging home to win the Doncaster Mile; successfully defending his 2013 crown.

A final field of 16 plus barrier draw for the 2014 Warwick Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
