Schofield Confirmed to Partner Tiger Tees in Warwick Stakes

August 21st, 2014

Partnering Boban to each of his three impressive Group 1 victories so-far, veteran jockey Glyn Schofield has been confirmed to instead take the ride on The Galaxy champion Tiger Tees in this weekend’s featured Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick after trainer Chris Waller elected to remove the Bernardini gelding from the race’s final field.

The standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Boban secured a perfect record of five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

While adding the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) during the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Boban displayed a blatant dislike for soggy, rain-affected surfaces; most notably via his disappointing eleventh in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 19th.

While pleased with the form displayed via a hard-fought fourth in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago, Waller’s decision to allow Schofield to find a different ride was more than acceptable, according to steward Marc Van Gestel.

“The Waller stable was doubtful about running Boban but they’re now going to declare Jeff Lloyd as the rider and with respect to the weather, wait and see if the track dries out,” Van Gestel told AAP.

“Given the circumstances we were happy to accede.”

Running hard to win the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington first-up on August 9th, Tiger Tees was a standout performer over the 2014 Autumn Carnival; winning the Listed Falvelon (1200m) first-up and continuing to build in form and class on his way to an impressive Group 1 victory in The Galaxy (1100m) and convincing third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) most notably on April 26th.

Leaving a decision on jockeys for both Tiger Tees and stable mate Laser Hawk late, trainer Joe Pride said he was thrilled to have picked up Schofield’s services for the 2014 Warwick Stakes.

“I was hoping some of the horses wouldn’t accept and I would end up getting a very good rider,” Pride said.

Securing an impressive total of 12 wins and five minor places from just 28 competitive starts so far, Tiger Tees is one of nine former Group 1 champions confirmed for the 2014 Warwick Stakes.
