Initially revealing he may remove the Group 1 champion from the final field on account of a likely rain-soaked Randwick racing surface, trainer Peter Moody has revealed he is now more than likely to keep Dissident locked in for this weekend’s featured Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).
A notable performer over major events through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Dissident has not been seen competitively on course since finishing a disappointing 12th in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th, on what was also a bogged Randwick track.
While allocated the slightly wide barrier 8, Moody told The Daily Telegraph that while not ideal, Dissident will have to begin his 2014 Spring Racing campaign as soon as possible if to reach prime condition ahead of the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October.
“Dissident doesn’t like it wet but probably has to kick off his campaign,’’ Moody said.
“Dissident has always been a good sort of a horse with a dominant build about him.
“He has gone on a bit since his three-year-old season but he’s always been a well-developed horse.
“We thought it’s a good time to give him his chance at a race like the Cox Plate, but only time will tell if it’s the right call.
“The one thing with him is that he’s improved every preparation and if that trend continues he could prove up to the top level.”
Contesting a commendable total of three wins and five minor places from just 13 competitive race starts so far, Dissident returned to racing in 2014 for a competitive second behind El Roca in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) on February 15th before securing impressive back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) most notably on March 15th.
Confirmed to be partnered by renowned jockey Blake Shinn, Dissident is currently available at generous odds of $12 for success in the 2014 Warwick Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au, or $3.30 to run a place.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering all new punters the chance to claim a bonus bet of up to $250 in time for the Warwick Stakes!
