Kathy O’Hara has partnered Zaratone in 23 of his 69 starts so far, and is confident the talented veteran is more than a chance of overcoming the classy field confirmed for Saturday’s featured 2015 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.
Zaratone has returned to racing in typically competitive form this time; running fifth in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) first-up before progressing to an impressive third in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) on June 6th.
Continuing to impress in placing second in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1100m) on July 4th, the Zariz gelding placed fifth in the July Sprint (1100m) and fourth in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) in his two most recent trips to the races.
While undoubtedly facing his toughest task to date this time when lining up alongside ten Group 1 winners in the 2015 Warwick Stakes, O’Hara is thrilled to have again been given the ride on the ten-year-old and believes he is as eager as ever to win.
“It’s a full field and obviously he’s a quick horse,” O’Hara told AAP.
“He’s never won at 1400 metres before, but he’s such a tough old campaigner I couldn’t completely rule him out.
“He loves his racing, he loves his job.
“He’s an old marvel. He’s won 17 races and he’s going as good as ever.
“He’s probably my favourite racehorse – no horse tries harder than he does.”
Posting seventeen wins and a further thirteen minors through his 69 career starts, Zaratone has been a strong and consistent performer since first appearing on course for Nick Olive in 2009; transferring to the care of current trainer Bjorn Baker prior to his 2013 preparation.
Allocated the somewhat wide barrier 9, Zaratone has been charged with overcoming a handicap of 59kgs in the 2015 Warwick Stakes.
