Trainer Chris Waller has revealed champion mare Winx will return to racing in the 2016 Warwick Stakes (1400m), ahead of a Spring Carnival campaign geared towards a defence of the Group 1 Cox Plate.
Winx has been the standout of Australian racing through the last 12 months, and remains unbeaten through nine starts since posting her maiden Group 1 win in the Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben Racecourse during the 2015 Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Returning to racing in 2015 in excellent condition, the daughter of Street Cry was unlucky not to break through for her first Group 1 win through the autumn season; finishing a close second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) most notably.
Resuming in spring for an impressive win in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m), Winx posted her second win at the highest level with a comfortable performance for success in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), in what was her only other spring start prior to the Cox Plate.
Trialling well in the lead-up to her competitive return this year, the mare out of Vegas Showgirl proved she was in a similar line of form when taking out the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) with complete ease on February 27th.
Posting her third Group 1 triumph in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) on February 27th, Winx repeated the dose amongst a particularly strong field in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on March 19th.
Jumping from the gates well in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships, Winx was settled in a good position in transit and proved she is capable of performing in even the most dire of conditions; attacking the line for her sixth win at the highest level.
Winx remains a clear and justifiable $3 favourite in early 2016 Cox Plate betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au her closest rival being Hong Kong-based runner Werther at a $13 quote.
