Winx Already Primed for 2016 Warwick Stakes

Trainer Chris Waller has revealed that champion mare Winx is already in the right condition for her return in the 2016 Warwick Stakes (1400m), more than a week prior to jump at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Winx is undefeated for close to eighteen months; posting an impressive nine-consecutive race wins highlighted by six triumphs at the highest level including a particularly dominant display in the Cox Plate (2040m) last spring.

Waller has set Winx for a fifth-up defence of her Cox Plate crown, and told The Daily Telegraph that the mare is primed for her first-up assignment; the Warwick Stakes 2016 on Saturday week.

“She’s ready to race now,” Waller said.

“If the Warwick Stakes was this weekend, she’d be running in it.

“Obviously the aim is to keep her winning and that makes her a different horse — most horses when they’re preparing for a Cox Plate are focused solely on that race but with her every race is a goal. My job is to make sure things don’t get overly complicated.

“At this stage she will have four runs before the Cox Plate — we’ll monitor the tracks, if we get a heavy track like last weekend then we won’t risk her on that.

“If she misses a run somewhere it won’t bother me, she won the Cox Plate last year third-up albeit off a shorter break.

“The George Main Stakes is on the agenda but there is also the Stakes at Caulfield a week later.

“After that she’ll run in the Caulfield Stakes and then two weeks into the Cox Plate.

“We’ll just see how she pulls up after each run and assess what her best option is but for now we’re just very excited about what is to come — she is just simply a very, very good racehorse.”

Breaking through for her maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben on May 30th last year, Winx returned in spring for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and continued her winning run of form through both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Cox Plate.

Resuming this year for a typically-comfortable win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 13th, Winx continued with consecutive triumphs in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 George Main Stakes (1500m) before taking out the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) most recently on April 2nd.
